Monthly Newsletter Fiddlers Grove Woodcarvers Lebanon, TN June 26, 2021
Meeting Conducted By: Rich Patterson
Location: Town Hall, Fiddlers Grove
Number in Attendance: 12 Visitors: 3
Old Business:
1. On May 29th, five club members represented the Fiddlers Grove Woodcarvers at the Heritage Day event in Granville, TN. The members were able to sell several of their carvings at this event. The club also received a $50 donation for our support of the event.
2. On June 5th, five members represented the club at the Neddy Jacobs Heritage Day in Fiddlers Grove. Rich read a letter from Fiddlers Grove thanking the club for attending the event. The letter indicated that, despite extensive advertising, they were surprised with how low the attendance was this year. The members who attended had a good time interacting among themselves and with those who attended. Some members were able to sell carvings at the event. Click here to see a copy of the letter.
3. The following woodcarving workshops are still available -- go to the "Events" tab on the club website for more information. Michele Parsons (wood burning) at the Leipers Fork Carving Club -- July 10-11; Buckeye Woodcarvers Roundup, Fletcher, OH -- July 21 - 24; Eureka Springs Woodcarving Rendezvous, Eureka Springs, AR -- September 27 - October 1; John Engler (medium relief) at the Leipers Fork Carving Club -- December 10 - 13.
New Business:
1. The Tuesday meetings for July and August will be as follows. Since I am hesitant to put home addresses on the web, I will send a reminder out to the membership with the location/address the Monday before the meeting. For July: 6th - Dedee, 13th - Gene, 20th - Butch, 27th - Phil. For August: 3rd - Dedee, 10th - Gene, 24th - Butch, 31st - Phil. These locations are not set in cement -- they are subject to change -- any changes will be sent out via email to the membership. Please note that we will not meet on Tuesday, August 17th because we will be at the Wilson County Fair.
2. We will not meet on Saturday, August 14th because we will be at the Wilson County Fair.
3. The Wilson County Fair/State Fair will be August 12 - 21 -- ten days this year -- they decided to add an extra day this year and start on a Thursday rather than a Friday, hence the extra day. There was a discussion regarding the space that we will have available this year -- we may not know how much space we will have until we get there on the 12th. and the amount of space we have will dictate how many members will be able to be there at the same time. Also, this may be the last year we are in the pole barn since the state may want to put some agricultural groups in there -- we will deal with next year when it comes. We also discussed who would work each day at the fair and a list will be compiled and sent out to the appropriate members. Since the state is partnering with Wilson County now, everything is subject to change from previous years and will probably continue to change as the state dictates what it wants. The state is putting a lot of money (reportedly millions) into the Agricultural Center and will probably want a return on its investment which will include influence on every aspect of the fair.
4. Rich introduced a new member to the club, Dale Holland. Dale has done extensive carving in the past and for various reasons, stopped carving but is looking to start back up again. We give a warm welcome to Dale.
5. Patricia was unable to attend the meeting but she sent a note indicating that the Wilson Bank and Trust Oktoberfest will be the weekend of October 16 and 17. The club usually supports this event as part of our community service.
Show & Tell
Five members and one guest had carvings to show at the meeting. Butch had two carvings -- an Uncle Sam and a "shelf" Santa
Earnest had an interesting carving of a globe supported by woodcarving tools. The entire carving was made out of one piece of wood. The continents on the globe were wood burned.
Clark had a set of geometric stars carved on both sides.
Hilda had a series of three carvings including a Santa, Leprechaun, and Uncle Sam.
Dale had a series of carvings that he had completed in the past. They included chess pieces made from characters of the Wizard of Id, a donkey, a styalized person playing the cello and three golf balls representing hear no evil, speak no evil and see no evil.
Lastly, we had chip carvings from Clem Kirsch, a guest from the Tannehill Carving Club in Birmingham, AL. Clem prefers chip carving to other carving styles and also likes carving crosses.
